Former BioWare Writer Clarifies Dragon Age's Status: 'It's Yours Now'

Sheryl Chee, a former writer for BioWare, reassures fans that despite uncertainties, the Dragon Age franchise is far from finished.

The future of the Dragon Age franchise seems uncertain, but former BioWare senior writer Sheryl Chee has stepped in to reassure fans, emphasizing that the series is “yours now.” Chee stated on Bluesky that while the latest game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, faced disappointing sales, the creative energy surrounding Dragon Age remains vibrant.

In her words, “A cool French woman dropped a cool quote from Camus on me today: ‘In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.’ (I mean, who does resistance like the French, right?)” She also expressed that even though EA/BioWare technically owns the IP, fans can still claim ownership of the ideas birthed from the games.

Chee noted, “But DA isn’t dead. There’s fic. There’s art. There are the connections we made through the games and because of the games. Technically EA/BioWare owns the IP but you can’t own an idea, no matter how much they want to.” This sentiment is a hopeful reminder to dedicated fans amidst current struggles at BioWare, where many developers have transitioned to other studios.

Despite the challenges, Chee reassures the community that Dragon Age’s essence continues in various forms, and encourages creativity among fans who feel inspired by the franchise.
