'No one wants to see Leon scared': Resident Evil 9 Requiem director discusses character choices

Koshi Nakanishi explains why Leon Kennedy isn't the main protagonist in Resident Evil 9 Requiem.

In a recent interview, Koshi Nakanishi, director of Resident Evil 9 Requiem, revealed that the beloved character Leon Kennedy is too suave to play the lead role in a horror game.

“No one wants to see Leon scared by anything,” Nakanishi shared. “He would just make a snarky remark and dodge the dangers.”

This new installment features Grace Ashcroft as the protagonist, who is portrayed as an introverted intelligence analyst for the FBI. Nakanishi emphasized Ashcroft’s unique perspective, which resonates with players who may experience fear in the same way.

The decision revolves around delivering a more immersive horror experience, contrasting with Leon’s established persona in the series.

The director also noted:

“This game is a requiem, a eulogy to those who came before.”

Fans are left curious about whether Leon might have a cameo, despite the focus on Ashcroft in marketing materials.

This characterization opens the door to new dynamics in gameplay and narrative, steering the franchise in an intriguing new direction.
