Warren Spector Celebrates 25 Years of Deus Ex, Acknowledges Team's Contributions
Warren Spector reflects on the enduring legacy of Deus Ex its 25th anniversary, emphasizing the collaborative effort behind its creation.
As the 25th anniversary of Deus Ex approaches, Warren Spector has come forward to celebrate the monumental impact of the game and to clarify that its success was not his alone. During a recent video message, Spector expressed his pride and joy for the legacy of Deus Ex but was quick to credit the entire team behind the project.
“I’m pleased and proud because, like every developer, I hoped to make something that lives on in people’s minds for long… I never expected or even dared to hope that Deus Ex would be so long-lasting, yet here we are.”
Spector acknowledged that while he conceptualized the game, its realization was a collective effort. He emphasized the collective nature of game development, stating,
“You don’t ship anything, let alone anything good, without a great team. The Deus Ex concept may have been mine, but the game itself, and all kudos aimed at it, belong to the great, great team that bought into a vision and made it a reality.”
He fondly remembers key team members such as Harvey Smith, Chris Norden, Jay Lee, Sheldon Pacotti, and Alexander Brandon, asserting that, without them, the iconic game would not exist.
Looking to the future, Spector reflects on the enduring influence of Deus Ex, stating,
“I’m proud as hell of the work they did back in 2000, but I’m at least as proud that we created something bigger than ourselves… We made a game that seems to have influenced games that followed, and we created a world people want to revisit over and over again. So here’s to the next 25 years. See you in 2052!”
2052, as many fans of the series know, is the year in which Deus Ex is set and represents a hopeful future that might see the series return.
