Chaos Ensues at RTX Hardware Launch in Japan

A lottery system meant to manage demand for Nvidia's RTX 5090 and 5080 graphics cards backfires, leading to disorder at a major retailer's store.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 and 5080 are finally available for purchase, yet anticipation has led to chaotic scenes. Retailers are struggling to manage the rush.

A Japanese retailer, PC Koubou, had instituted a lottery system to mitigate scalping for the sought-after 50-series cards. But during an earlier lottery in Akihabara, things quickly devolved into confusion, with eager consumers creating long lines that spilled into side streets.

Customers at the Chiyoda branch were reportedly seen climbing a nearby school fence as they tried to secure one of these limited editions.

Due to the overwhelming response, the Nagoya store initially intended to hold an in-store lottery, but they have recently opted to switch applications online instead. The number of available cards is also disheartening: only 15 units of the RTX 5090 and 113 units of the 5080 are set for sale.

“The line was massive, and many went out of control as they waited for their chance,” a witness mentioned.

As people around the world are waiting for these cards, scalpers are already looking to profit, with prices reaching as high as $7,000 in some cases. It’s a grim forecast for those intent on acquiring a 5090 or 5080 card soon.
