'Our Community Helped Shape Borderlands 4': No Minimap, But A New Combat Radar Introduced

Gearbox's Randy Pitchford discusses how player feedback influenced Borderlands 4's navigation system, replacing the traditional minimap with an optional combat radar.

Randy Pitchford, the CEO of Gearbox Software, shared insights on how the community influenced their decision to remove the standard minimap from Borderlands 4. He acknowledged that player feedback on the lack of a combat radar had its merits, leading to the introduction of an optional system that aims to assist gamers in navigating the sprawling environments of the game.

Pitchford noted, “The people who stuck with their feelings about a combat radar had a point.” He explained that while the game’s design focuses on a vast and seamless world with varying quests, the new combat radar feature will be available when the game releases on September 12, 2025. Gearbox is emphasizing a new navigation experience by utilizing tools like a compass and an AI drone companion, enhancing the overall gameplay while still addressing community concerns.

This shift away from a typical minimap reflects an ongoing trend in game design that prioritizes immersion and player experience, indicating that community interactions significantly shape gaming developments.
