Rumored Platform Expansion for Final Fantasy 16

Hints suggest that Final Fantasy 16 may soon be coming to Nintendo's upcoming console, the Switch 2.

The producer of Final Fantasy 16, Naoki Yoshida, along with the creative director, Kazutoyo Maehiro, hinted at a potential port of the game to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Yoshida noted that since Final Fantasy 16 is currently accessible on PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S, the final remaining console that could host it is Nintendo’s latest device.

After its launch on PlayStation 5 in 2023, the game transitioned to PC via platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store in 2024. A surprising release on Xbox consoles occurred nearly two years later, making an unexpected appearance during the June Xbox Games Showcase. Despite a shaky start on the Xbox platform, it has since climbed to the 11th position on the Top Paid Games Chart in the US. Furthermore, Final Fantasy 16 is available on Xbox through the Game Pass Ultimate program, allowing users to play it on any compatible device.

Adding to this, Maehiro has expressed a desire to conquer the new system, stating his intention to make the game available on the Switch 2, which can play older versions of Final Fantasy games from the original console. With the Switch 2 struggling to gain traction for third-party games compared to its popular first-party titles, there’s speculation on whether graphically demanding games like Final Fantasy 16 can run efficiently on the new hardware.

While everything remains speculative, the possibility of Final Fantasy 16 making its way to the Nintendo Switch 2 certainly raises hopes for gamers looking forward to an expansive gaming experience.
