Elder Scrolls Online Introduces Community Add-Ons for Consoles

ZeniMax Online Studios has rolled out support for community-created add-ons in The Elder Scrolls Online for console players, shifting gameplay options for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 users.

ZeniMax Online Studios has enabled community-made console add-ons for The Elder Scrolls Online, but only for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. Although the feature was introduced with the free Update 46 base-game patch on June 2, console add-ons were only recently enabled on June 23. Add-ons have been available for the PC since The Elder Scrolls Online first launched on the platform in April 2014. Although the game arrived on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One just a year later, the update marks the first time console players will have the option to modify their experiences with player-made content.

Set nearly a millennium before the events of Skyrim, The Elder Scrolls Online expands the world of Tamriel into the MMORPG space. The Elder Scrolls Online celebrated its 10-year anniversary in April 2024, with the game receiving constant support from its developers throughout the decade. Despite a rough early start in its first year, The Elder Scrolls Online successfully managed to transition to a buy-to-play model paired with an optional premium subscription and a number of paid add-ons and player cosmetics.

As of June 23, player-made add-ons have been enabled for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 versions of The Elder Scrolls Online, although only mods that affect the game’s user interface are supported at this time. Console players looking to alter their experience with add-ons can browse, search for, and install available add-ons directly from the game’s Options menu. While the options for add-ons are limited at the time of this writing, ZeniMax has expressed its commitment to a new content model that will see new seasonal updates for The Elder Scrolls Online throughout the rest of the year, which may bring an expansion of the console add-on experience.

There has been no word on whether community add-ons will be brought to PS4 and Xbox One. Despite the exclusion of previous-gen consoles, ZeniMax developers have confirmed that the team is working on adding crossplay for The Elder Scrolls Online, although no timetable was provided. How crossplay would be affected by an imbalance between players using community add-ons and those without access, or if PS4 and Xbox One players will ever have add-ons enabled, remains to be seen.

After 11 years, ZeniMax continues to support the fantasy MMO with frequent updates and content drops. During April’s The Elder Scrolls Online Direct, the studio revealed a number of changes coming to The Elder Scrolls Online for all platforms. Among a number of visual improvements, future seasons will see new dungeons, story events, and the game’s initial antagonist, Molag Bal, returning to wreak havoc across Tamriel once again. With add-ons slowly making their way to consoles, players shouldn’t find themselves in short supply of content anytime soon.
