Nintendo Switch 2 Sales Surpass Xbox and PS5 Digital in Japan

The Nintendo Switch 2 has broken sales records, exceeding the combined lifetime sales of current-gen Xbox consoles and the PS5 Digital in Japan.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has already surpassed the lifetime sales of the Xbox Series X, Series S, and the digital PS5 in Japan. It was evident that the console would be a commercial success before its release, thanks to the strong performance of its predecessor and the rapid sell-out of pre-orders. After just a couple of weeks on the market, the Nintendo Switch 2 has made a remarkable impact, more significant than many expected.

It took little time for Nintendo’s latest console to outpace its competitors, as the Switch 2 has become the fastest-selling console in history, achieving 3.5 million units sold within days. In contrast, the Steam Deck has sold between 4 and 5 million units since its launch in 2022. Globally, Nintendo’s hybrid console is a resounding success, and its performance in Japan stands out especially.

According to sales data gathered by Famitsu, the Switch 2 has sold 1,101,136 units as of June 15 in Japan, outperforming the PS5 Digital Edition and all of Xbox’s current-gen systems, which have been available for several years now. Former Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida previously stated that PlayStation does not view Nintendo as a rival, especially considering the Japanese market, where Xbox “almost doesn’t exist.” Sales figures illustrate this, as the Series X has only sold about a third of a million units in Japan, while the Series X Digital Edition’s sales fall short of what the Switch 2 achieved in just its first week.

Future sales velocity of the Switch 2 remains uncertain. The original Switch is the best-selling console of all time in the US, outperforming the PS2 in 2024, with over 20 million units sold in Japan alone. While it may take time, the new console has had an impressive start, and its future performance should be intriguing.

High demand has even drawn the attention of thieves, with reports of approximately $1.4 million worth of Switch 2 consoles being stolen from a truck in Colorado recently. This extraordinary occurrence highlights the current popularity of Nintendo’s latest hardware.
