GOG Introduces Donation Option for Game Purchases
Gamers can now choose to donate while purchasing titles on GOG, likening the move to charity support.
As video game prices continue to rise, GOG has introduced a feature allowing players to donate additional funds when making a purchase. This is presented as an opportunity to contribute to game preservation efforts. When checking out, customers will see an option to add extra funds that will support the maintenance and improvement of classic titles, ensuring they remain playable on modern systems.
“Keep game preservation alive,” the message reads. “Videogame preservation is an ongoing effort. Any additional amount you add to this order helps to fund fixes, ports, and DRM-free releases.”
This new system resembles a tip jar more than a traditional donation, as it allows for both preset and custom donation amounts. The response from the GOG community has been largely positive, with some users already expressing willingness to support the initiative, possibly leading to a culture of voluntary contributions that exceed the game’s purchase price. However, opinions are mixed; while some gamers welcome the opportunity, others question the business model of a for-profit platform like GOG seeking voluntary donations.
