RuneScape's Pride Month Event Canceled Amid Controversy

Jagex faces backlash after cancelling the upcoming Pride Month festivities for RuneScape, impacting its LGBTQ+ community.

RuneScape and its developer, Jagex, are facing backlash from fans and employees following the announcement to cancel the game’s Pride Month activities for 2025, citing a “changing reality.” The famed MMORPG, which has been prominent in the gaming world since its launch in 2001, has seen numerous updates and changes over the years, including the introduction of different versions and the revival of its classic edition, Old School RuneScape.

Since 2022, the “Tales of Pride” event has been a cherished occasion within RuneScape’s annual calendar, celebrating its diverse LGBTQ+ community through in-game items and activities. Each year, the event included unique cosmetics like the “Banner of Pride,” and introduced new designs in 2023. Jagex also organized community-driven “Pride Parades” in June, welcoming countless players.

However, the studio has decided to shelve the new content planned for this year’s event. Reports indicate that this decision was met with significant backlash, as many employees were already aware of the new content being completed.

Jagex’s CEO, Jon Bellamy, attributed the cancellation to societal shifts towards a “less moral” environment and escalating negativity towards so-called “woke” content. While it was confirmed that 2024’s Pride celebration would return, it will lack any new features this time around. This stance may lead some members of the LGBTQ+ community to explore Pride events in alternative games, as companies like Blizzard are planning their own festivities for 2025.

The cancellation has prompted an outcry from both fans and Jagex staff, leading to the circulation of an open letter addressed to management, urging them not to yield to opposition and to support the inclusivity of the game.
