Leadership Overhaul at Embracer Group as CEO Steps Down

Lars Wingefors transitions to executive chair after a turbulent tenure as CEO, focusing on company strategy and acquisitions.

There are significant changes occurring at Embracer Group as CEO Lars Wingefors steps down from his role, transitioning to the position of executive chair. Wingefors will now concentrate on capital allocation, mergers and acquisitions, and overall strategy.

“With the start of this new phase, I am thankful for the years and lessons learned as CEO of Embracer. While the road has not always been straight, I am incredibly proud of the achievements made possible by our talented teams, which have created some incredible experiences for gamers.”

During Wingefors’ tenure, Embracer Group experienced significant financial challenges, especially following the collapse of a $2 billion investment deal, leading to studio closures and extensive layoffs. The company had previously expanded aggressively but now grapples with sustainable growth.

Phil Rogers, the existing CEO of Crystal Dynamics and Eidos, will take over as CEO on August 1 after being appointed as Wingefors’ successor. This leadership change has implications for the company’s future direction as the gaming market continues to evolve.
