SAG-AFTRA Union Finalizes Tentative Agreement After Striking for 10 Months
The SAG-AFTRA union has reached a tentative agreement with major companies, including EA and Epic, after 10 months of striking concerning AI voice acting protections.
The SAG-AFTRA union, representing numerous performers across various industries, has reached a “tentative agreement” with major companies after a 10-month strike that began on July 26, 2024. Members remain on strike until the agreement is finalized, aiming to secure critical protections against the use of AI in voice acting.
The agreement involves notable companies including EA, Warner Bros., and Epic Games. Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the union’s National Executive Director, stated that the deal includes essential provisions to safeguard performers’ livelihoods in the age of AI.
Fran Drescher, SAG-AFTRA’s President, expressed gratitude towards the performers for their tenacity during negotiations. She indicated that while a significant step forward has been made, the union will soon begin preparations for further negotiations focusing on ongoing improvements.
The union contends that this tentative agreement is a response to the increasing concerns among voice actors about generative AI being utilized to potentially replace their roles. As negotiations continue, further details will be disclosed for member approval.
