Larian Studios has concluded their work on Baldur’s Gate 3, with no DLC or sequel announced. Despite this, the financial success of the game, reportedly raking in around $800 million, has prompted Wizards of the Coast (WOTC) to explore the development of similar serious CRPGs.
WOTC president John Hight has assured fans in an interview with Polygon that they are committed to producing more CRPGs that are as engaging and thoughtful as Baldur’s Gate 3.
Hight remarked:
“Don’t get me wrong, we are going to do CRPGs that are going to be as serious as BG3.”
This statement maintains the excitement surrounding the franchise as WOTC seeks to balance the demands of traditional tabletop RPG players with high-quality video game experiences, ensuring that any adaptations are as compelling as the source material they aim to represent.
As they move ahead, there are hints at projects in the pipeline, but little details have been disclosed. One project being developed by Stig Asmussen, known for his work on the Star Wars Jedi series, is a ‘singleplayer action-adventure’ game within the Dungeons & Dragons universe, though it appears distinct from the CRPG formula that fans have come to love.
