Final Fantasy Creator Embraces One Last Journey
Hironobu Sakaguchi, the mastermind behind Final Fantasy, plans to return for one final game despite earlier retirement plans.
Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of Final Fantasy, departed from Square Enix in 2003 to establish Mistwalker and has since directed a variety of titles, from intricate RPGs to mobile games. Earlier, he hinted at retiring after releasing Fantasian in 2021. However, in a recent interview with The Verge, he revealed his intentions for a final project:
“It’ll be part two of my farewell note.”
Sakaguchi expressed, “In the distant future, or perhaps when I’m gone, I imagine this game will become relevant should anyone explore the legacy of me or Final Fantasy.”
Though he considered Fantasian his last project, he admits the development was so satisfying that he plans to create one more game:
“Humans are greedy creatures, aren’t we? For that reason, I’m currently collaborating with my Fantasian team on a new project.”
He emphasized that this new work aims to be a successor to Final Fantasy VI, striving for a mix of nostalgia and innovation:
“It’ll be part two of my farewell note.”
This revelation is stirring excitement among fans, especially regarding Final Fantasy VI, often seen as a pinnacle in the series. It seems retirement isn’t in Sakaguchi’s immediate plans, as he sets the stage for what could be an extraordinary finale.
