During the June 8 Xbox Games Showcase, Square Enix surprised gamers with the shadow drop of Final Fantasy 16 on Xbox Series X/S and the Xbox app for Windows PCs, arriving nearly two years after it launched on PS5. The Xbox version includes the base game along with the Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide expansions.
Initially released in June 2023, Final Fantasy 16 stands out as the first main installment in the series to receive a Mature rating. It takes players on a journey through the war-torn land of Valisthea, where the main character Clive Rosfield and his Eikon, Ifrit, fight against the oppressive reign of the Mothercrystals.
A year after its initial exclusivity ended, the title was also made available on Steam and the Epic Games Store, opening its world to more players. Despite ongoing rumors about Square Enix’s plans for the Xbox community, they had previously stayed silent about the game’s availability for their fans.
With the new Xbox port, the game also becomes playable via the Xbox Cloud Gaming platform, although it is not included in Xbox Game Pass at the moment. Nonetheless, fans can expect further content from the Final Fantasy series to arrive in 2025.
In conjunction with the Xbox launch, Creative Studio 3 has plans to release the eagerly awaited Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles on September 30, indicating a promising year ahead for Final Fantasy enthusiasts on Xbox.
