Surf the Skies on a Magic Sword: Sword of the Sea Set for August Release

The magical adventure game Sword of the Sea will launch on August 19, bringing unique gameplay experiences.

More than two years since its initial trailer, Sword of the Sea, a magical surfing adventure from Giant Squid, finally announces its release date—August 19—during Sony’s State of Play showcase last night. This game will mark the third title from Giant Squid, the studio known for the critically acclaimed underwater exploration game Abzû and the enchanting archery adventure The Pathless, which received an impressive 85% score from reviewers.

In Sword of the Sea, players will assume the role of an undead wizard traversing a desert where the dunes flow like water. You will be utilizing magic to restore the ocean and lush vegetation to their original state, all while performing radical tricks and stunts on a giant magical sword that acts as a surfboard. It’s inevitable to compare Sword of the Sea with the style of another mystical desert adventure, Journey, which shares some of the same development talents. However, it appears that Sword of the Sea will be more action-oriented.

The studio has yet to display any kind of combat mechanics, but the trailer features intimidating creatures, suggesting there might be high-stakes moments where players will surf on a colossal enemy. Importantly, the trailer confirms an exciting feature: players can pet the magical flying dolphins sprinkled throughout the game.

Sword of the Sea is set to launch on both Steam and Epic Games Store on August 19, 2025. The Pathless is also currently available for a 75% discount on Steam, allowing players to experience what Giant Squid has to offer.
