In the upcoming game Tides of Tomorrow, an exciting asynchronous multiplayer system is introduced, which allows players’ choices to directly impact one another’s experiences. Unlike traditional NPCs that react based solely on pre-defined scripts, the behavior of characters you meet will be influenced by the actions of other players. This means if a player previously stole from or harmed an NPC, their subsequent encounter with you may be quite hostile.
The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where players traverse various islands, with repercussions based on prior interactions affecting their current gameplay. With statements like, “We should make Road 96 but with boats! Boat 96!” from the developers at Digixart, it’s clear humor remains a design element while they explore a fresh take on multiplayer storytelling.
In the PlayStation Blog, Adrien Poncet elaborates on the mechanics of Tides of Tomorrow.
“When starting a game of Tides of Tomorrow, you must select a player to ‘follow’. This player has played the game before you and can be a total stranger, someone from your friend list, or even a famous streamer.”
Essentially, players will have the chance to witness the ’echoes’ of others’ actions, helping to avoid traps, solve puzzles, and determine their journey in relation to past players. The game is slated for release on February 24, 2026.
