Epic Admits Weaknesses of its Store Again, Reveals Over $2 Billion Paid to Developers

Epic Games acknowledges the ongoing issues with its store while touting its financial contributions to developers.

Epic Games is admitting yet again that the Epic Games Store (EGS) has its shortcomings. Just a month ago, CEO Tim Sweeney remarked on the store’s clunkiness, and now, during Unreal Fest, GM Steve Allison echoed those concerns, stating that despite years of improvements, there remains significant work ahead to enhance the user experience.

Allison asserted:

“Even after years of building the store on PC, we know there’s still a ton of work to be done to deliver a world-class experience.”

While the EGS has undergone enhancements, it still lags behind Steam, which has had features like preloading and voice chat for years. The current roadmap aims to introduce such capabilities. Allison commented, “We’re also putting great focus on ongoing launcher improvements that will make the store feel great to use.” The EGS has been operating for seven years and is still playing catch-up in many areas.

However, on a brighter note for developers, Epic has announced that it has disbursed over $2 billion to game developers and publishers while providing a plethora of free games for players. This approach certainly adds to the appeal for developers looking for that financial support. Although the EGS might not currently rival Steam in terms of features, it could make strides to become less unappealing.

As the gaming community watches closely, it remains to be seen if these improvements will change players’ perceptions of the Epic Games Store.
