Witcher 4's Development Accelerates Thanks to Unreal Engine's New Features

CD Projekt Red and Epic Games discuss the advancements in developing Witcher 4 through Unreal Engine 5.6.

In a recent interview, CD Projekt Red and Epic discussed the impressive progress made in the development of the Witcher 4 using the updated Unreal Engine 5.6. This new engine significantly improves open-world game capabilities, which is expected to enhance the overall experience for players.

“This is exactly what we wanted to do in Unreal … we ramped up dramatically for this release and I think it shows,” says Wyeth Johnson, underscoring the enhancements brought about by Unreal Engine 5.6. More specifically, he noted how these advancements enable superior open-world development, evidenced by the stunning Witcher 4 demo that runs smoothly on standard PlayStation 5 hardware.

Johnson’s enthusiasm extends to other developers, suggesting that their growth could lead to tremendous innovation in game development. “Developers should be able to achieve incredible quality … they get to define what that quality is,” he added.

Moreover, Girbig shared his excitement, affirming that the switch from Red Engine to Unreal has unlocked new creative possibilities, allowing teams to build larger and more intricate worlds.

However, fans have a long wait ahead as Witcher 4 isn’t set to release until sometime in 2027. The collaboration between CD Projekt Red and Epic is poised to reshape future gaming developments.
