Closure of Echtra Games: A Fallout from Zynga's Acquisition
Echtra Games, known for developing Torchlight 3, is set to shut down after failing to launch its new RPG under Zynga.
Four years after Zynga’s acquisition of Echtra Games, the studio known for Torchlight 3 is shutting down, as confirmed by IGN.
Zynga stated, “Zynga has made the difficult decision to cease operations at its Echtra studio, ending development on future titles and reducing roles. This decision is part of a strategic realignment of the company’s resources and priorities. We will work closely with impacted employees so they are treated with the utmost respect and consideration as we navigate this difficult process.”
Echtra Games was established in 2016 by Max Schaefer, previously a co-founder of Runic Games and Blizzard North. The studio aimed to develop Torchlight Frontiers, which was later reassessed, resulting in its transformation into Torchlight 3.
Unfortunately, Torchlight 3 did not resonate as expected, lacking the charm of its predecessors. Zynga acquired Echtra shortly after the game’s troubled release, with plans for a new RPG that never materialized. The closure aligns with recent layoffs and restructuring within Zynga, linked to broader changes in corporate strategy.
Additionally, Zynga recently announced the cancellation of Star Wars: Hunters, another project under its wing, leading to increased scrutiny of its operations and prioritization within the gaming market.
