Atari Distances Itself from 'RealPongCoin'

Atari has officially disavowed the 'RealPongCoin' meme currency, asserting no association with this crypto project and warning consumers of possible deception.

On January 23, Atari released a press statement rejecting ‘RealPongCoin’ or ‘$PONG’, a recently launched meme cryptocurrency. The company announced it has no ties to the coin, which uses Atari’s trademark without consent. Atari previously explored cryptocurrency initiatives but has since shifted focus back to retro gaming and preserving video game history.

“RealPongCoin or $PONG is using Atari’s registered PONG trademark without Atari’s consent or approval, and the company has no affiliation with the crypto project,” the release states. “Atari is warning the public that RealPongCoin risks deceiving consumers by suggesting an affiliation with Atari, and that Atari’s legal team is actively reviewing measures to stop the misuse of its intellectual property.”

A brief investigation into RealPongCoin reveals a lack of credible information; Atari’s announcement dominates the discourse surrounding it. The official website for $PONG appears sparse and unverified.

Further, the $PONG account on X insists twice that it is “not affiliated with Atari,” with disclaimers claiming it does not constitute an investment opportunity.

Despite the controversy, it seems like Atari is keen to maintain its reputation beyond the crypto unrest it previously engaged with.

Under Wade Rosen’s leadership, Atari has contained its venture into the cryptocurrency scene and refocused efforts on game preservation and retro publications. The acquisition of databases such as MobyGames and partnerships with developers like Digital Eclipse have revitalized their portfolio.
