Electronic Arts Shuts Down Black Panther Game Development

EA cancels a Black Panther video game and shuts down Cliffhanger Games, citing a need to redirect their creative efforts to more profitable projects.

Electronic Arts has confirmed the cancellation of the Black Panther game, developed by Cliffhanger Games, which was announced less than two years ago. The closure of the studio follows an email from Laura Miele, president of EA Entertainment and Technology, who stated that they need to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.”

Miele highlighted current projects like Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends, while promising to continue the development of their Iron Man game, a new Star Wars: Jedi game, and the next installment in the Mass Effect series.

These changes come shortly after EA laid off 300 to 400 employees and terminated two incubation projects. This continues an ongoing trend as EA reassesses its operations following the unsuccessful launch of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which failed to meet sales expectations.
