Byond Game Engine Faces Extended DDoS Assault, Allegedly By a Coercive Group

The Byond game engine is enduring a prolonged DDoS attack, allegedly instigated by a group pushing it to become open-source.

The Byond game engine, known for its use in games like Space Station 13, is currently enduring a DDoS attack that has lasted well into its third week. This incident has garnered attention due to allegations that a group named “the international free and open-source software community” is behind the attack, aiming to force creator LummoxJR into making the engine open-source.

According to a now-deleted Reddit post, the group claims, “Attacks on Byond servers are a symptom of your obstinance. They will persist as long as you ignore the voices of those who keep your platform afloat. We demand you voluntarily side with progress.”

The ongoing cyber assault raises ethical questions regarding the use of such tactics to promote a cause. LummoxJR commented on the situation, suggesting that the DDoS rampage may stem from personal vendettas rather than a community-driven objective.

For now, the Byond website remains inaccessible, and efforts to mitigate the attack are in progress without a clear timeline for restoration. In a positive turn for its users, some resources, including bug reports and downloads, are being made available on Discord.
