A24 to Adapt Viral Creepypasta 'The Backrooms' into a Movie

Chiwetel Ejiofor and Cristin Milioti are in negotiations to star in a film based on the online phenomenon, The Backrooms.

In a significant move for the realm of film adaptations, A24 is embarking on a project to create a movie based on the popular creepypasta known as The Backrooms. This 2019 Internet phenomenon has captured the fascination of many and is recognized as the foundational inspiration for numerous games available on Steam.

Recent reports indicate that notable actors Chiwetel Ejiofor, acclaimed for his performance in 12 Years a Slave, and Cristin Milioti, remembered for her roles in How I Met Your Mother and Fargo, are currently in discussions to join the cast. Although specifics regarding their individual roles remain undisclosed, both actors are currently only “in talks” to appear in the film.

Kane Parsons, the creator behind the viral YouTube series associated with The Backrooms, is set to direct this adaptation, with screenwriter Roberto Patino on board to pen the script.

The Backrooms gained notoriety for its unique premise: a mysterious infinite space characterized by eerie yellow corridors and unsettlingly uniform rooms, resulting in an atmosphere of existential dread. Its appeal lies not only in the strange visual representation but also in its community-driven narrative development, primarily arising from threads on platforms like 4chan.

As the trend of adapting popular online narratives into films continues to grow, the discussion surrounding A24’s new project reflects the increasing intersection of traditional cinema with internet culture.
