Fortnite Returns to US App Store After 1741-Day Absence

After almost five years, Fortnite's return to the iOS App Store marks a significant moment for Epic Games and its CEO Tim Sweeney.

In August 2020, Apple removed Fortnite from the iOS App Store for violating terms. Epic Games’ decision to use its own payment processor led to this significant dispute. Now, almost five years later, Fortnite is once again available on the App Store.

The return is marked by a partial victory for Epic CEO Tim Sweeney, who expressed readiness to reconcile. After the removal, Sweeney pursued legal action against Apple for enforcing exclusive use of its payment processor, resulting in a mixed outcome.

The court ruling allowed Epic to direct users to external sites for purchases, but Apple responded with a new fee structure aimed at discouraging bypassing its system. Notably, the court had admonished Apple for delaying Fortnite’s return, reinforcing calls for compliance with its directive.

In a recent tweet, Sweeney announced Fortnite’s reinstatement, exclaiming, “we back fam.” As Fortnite re-launches, players can expect perks for choosing Epic’s payment system over Apple’s, including a 20% bonus on purchases.
