SteelSeries Rival 3 Gen 2: A Fresh Look at Removable Batteries in Gaming Mice

The SteelSeries Rival 3 Gen 2 revives the concept of removable batteries, prompting a reconsideration of their practicality in modern gaming.

I transitioned to using wireless mice three to four years back, and since then, I’ve had no desire to revert. Initially, I dismissed the idea of gaming mice with removable batteries as outdated. However, the latest version of the SteelSeries Rival 3 has made a compelling case for their benefits.

I’ve been testing this new iteration for the past few days, and it’s forced me to reconsider my previous biases. Surprisingly, I now see the value in gaming mice equipped with removable batteries.

In 2021, we reviewed the original SteelSeries Rival 3, which was a solid budget option but had its drawbacks. The new version continues to use removable batteries—either one or two AAA batteries—depending on your preference for weight.

This new model retains its agility with an 18K DPI sensor, low click latency (1.9 ms), and impressive battery longevity—450 hours on Bluetooth and up to 200 hours on 2.4 GHz. Users can easily switch between these modes with a toggle on the underside.

While I’ve appreciated these features, what surprised me most is that I didn’t feel a significant loss by opting for removable batteries, compared to my rechargeable Logitech G Pro X Superlight. Though many battery-operated devices support rechargeable options, there are still some that don’t.

The Rival 3 Gen 2 doesn’t come bundled with rechargeable batteries, which is a letdown. However, I look forward to using rechargeable AA batteries that can be swapped while one set is charging, much like the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless headset.

While this may feel like an inconvenience, it’s just a matter of keeping a charging pack ready and replacing batteries as needed. This is preferable to having to plug my mouse in every few days, leading to fewer cables and ensuring my mouse is always ready to use without downtime.

For now, the Rival 3 Gen 2 has managed to alter my prior views on removable battery options with gaming mice. Further critiques will be reserved for my full review coming soon!
