Tim Sweeney Claims Epic's Legal Battle with Apple and Google is Costly but Necessary

Tim Sweeney expresses no regrets despite the substantial financial burden of Epic Games' ongoing legal conflicts with Apple and Google.

Epic Games has been engaged in a prolonged dispute with Apple and Google regarding their stringent app ecosystem fees. Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic, has made it clear that although the company has incurred significant costs in this endeavor, he has no regrets.

“So no regrets, though it’s been terribly costly.”

The legal battle stems from Epic’s stance against the high commission fees, which are nearly 30%. Despite spending considerable funds, Epic has yet to reinstate Fortnite on iOS in the US, and the Epic Games Store is still navigating its way to establish a foothold. To mitigate costs for developers, Epic is absorbing Apple’s controversial fees, which Sweeney labels as illegal.

Currently, Epic is focusing on making the Epic Games Store available on more platforms and ensuring developers can benefit financially. Sweeney revealed in interviews that over $1 billion has already been invested in this ongoing struggle, which he regards as crucial for the company’s future.

In a candid moment, he mentioned,

“I think we might run into serious financial problems after a couple more decades of this.”

Despite these challenges, Sweeney remains determined to advocate for a more open marketplace, asserting that the fight is not just for Epic but for a fairer ecosystem for all developers.

He concluded by indicating the future outlook for Epic is promising, with intentions to expand their mobile reach further.

“Do you want your kids to grow up in a market where Apple and Google extract all the profit from all digital businesses?”
