Hideo Kojima recently shared insights regarding the feedback he received from playtesters of his first game after leaving Konami, Death Stranding. According to him, 60% of testers expressed their dislike for the game. Kojima remarked:
“I conducted numerous tests for the first Death Stranding. I often found that out of ten testers, four loved the game while six thought it was terrible.”
In light of how sharply divided opinions were on the initial title, he admitted to feeling somewhat let down by the overwhelmingly positive responses to the testing of Death Stranding 2. He noted,
“I don’t want to create games that just appeal to the masses or sell millions of copies.”
Despite receiving broader acclaim for the sequel, Kojima wishes it was a bit more divisive, conveying that he appreciates feedback in the form of controversys as it encourages creativity. He reflected on Death Stranding’s unique approach to gameplay, which emphasized exploration and emotional depth over traditional action. Nevertheless, he acknowledges that the original was successful, achieving great sales and fostering a dedicated fanbase.
Kojima hopes that the creative risks taken in Death Stranding will continue in its sequel, fostering an engaging experience that maintains its originality.
