In a recent testimony to the US Congress, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, highlighted the enormous potential of artificial intelligence (AI), asserting that it could be even more transformative than the internet.
Altman stressed the importance of infrastructure investment and emphasized the necessity of a unified regulatory framework to nurture AI’s growth. He was accompanied by other tech leaders, including AMD’s Lisa Su, Coreweave’s Michael Intrator, and Microsoft’s Brad Smith, all of whom advocated for streamlined policies that would foster quicker advancements in the field.
The meeting also confronted the competitive race against China in the AI domain, with Republican Senator Ted Cruz underscoring the urgency of maintaining US leadership. Altman pointed out that the United States must focus on innovation and values to outpace global competitors.
He also praised Texas for attracting AI corporations to establish data centers, declaring that one such facility in Abilene will be the largest of its kind globally. However, he lamented the cumbersome nature of the current multifaceted regulatory environment, suggesting a more coherent approach would enable industry players to respond rapidly to technological advancements.
