'I Enjoy Crafting Doom Titles': Director Hugo Martin Assures 'Doom: The Dark Ages' Is Just the Beginning

The upcoming game will not end the current Doom saga, according to director Hugo Martin.

Doom has been a long-standing franchise since its debut in 1993—an incredible 32 years ago. Following the successful reboot in 2016, which reestablished its position as one of gaming’s premier first-person shooters, the series is set to expand with the new installment titled Doom: The Dark Ages. Creative director Hugo Martin states that this will not mark an end to the series.

“It isn’t designed to be the end of something,” Martin remarked during a recent preview event. (Translation: It is not meant to conclude anything.)

Martin emphasized that while the team is entirely focused on this current project, it’s not a final thought in terms of the Doom storyline.

“Genuinely, sincerely, we’re really just focused on this right now,” he added, clarifying that the new installment is not the conclusion of the saga. (Translation: We are dedicated to this project at the moment.)

For Doom fans, this reassurance shouldn’t come as any surprise as big-budget video games thrive on sequels. Unlike narrative-heavy titles, Doom’s storyline is straightforward, focusing on defeating demons, which, while enriched with lore over the years, is not crucial for the gameplay experience.

The game description currently available on Steam reads:

Doom: The Dark Ages is the single-player, action FPS prequel to the acclaimed Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal. You assume the role of the Doom Slayer, a legendary warrior battling against Hell’s forces, with the release set for 2025.

Martin expressed his enthusiasm for the franchise, stating, “I like making Doom games. I wouldn’t have a problem doing this for a long time.”

(Translation: I enjoy developing Doom games and could continue doing so.)

Doom: The Dark Ages is expected to launch later this year.
