It’s been an eventful year for fans of Chrono Trigger, with rumors surrounding a potential remake surfacing repeatedly, only to be dismissed swiftly. However, the absence of any recent activity from Square Enix regarding the franchise has left many feeling perplexed.
On one hand, there’s corporate intrigue as Square Enix hinted earlier this March about plans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger through projects that might extend beyond the game itself.
In a recent interview, Yuji Horii, the esteemed designer known for his role in creating Chrono Trigger and countless entries in the Dragon Quest series, revealed his desire to explore a revival of the game. He acknowledged the upcoming anniversary, stating, “Yes, it has been a long time. Yes, I want to do something.” Horii also mentioned receiving numerous requests for a Chrono Trigger remake and indicated he is considering the prospects.
Adding to the buzz, a recent miscommunication at a Comicon event in Italy saw a translator mistakenly claim Horii confirmed a remake, leading to a flurry of excitement which was later clarified as a translation error.
An HD-2D remake seems to be a likely approach for Chrono Trigger, especially given the successful reception of similar remakes within the Dragon Quest series. However, there are aspirations among some fans for a complete overhaul akin to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, albeit this may be too optimistic considering Square Enix’s history of maintaining high sales expectations.
As it stands, speculation around a Chrono Trigger revival seems more palpable than ever. For those interested, the original game is currently available at a 50% discount on Steam.
