Buffalo's Stunning Transparent HDD: A Nod to the Past
Buffalo introduces a new transparent hard drive, honoring its legacy in hard disk technology with a modern twist.
Buffalo Japan recently launched an eye-catching hard disk drive (HDD) to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
A Beautiful Blast from the Past
This new commemorative model, dubbed the Buffalo HD-SKL, is inspired by the company’s first transparent HDD released in 1998. The modern version boasts not only aesthetics but functionality as well.
You can admire the inner machinery in action through an innovative mount, which showcases the actuator arm moving smoothly across the rotating platter.

Key Features and Pricing
Despite its stunning design, this HDD is fully functional and uses a standard USB 3.2 (Gen 1) interface. However, it’s exclusively available in Japan and is priced at around 100,000 yen (approximately $696). While it offers 4 TB of storage, this price point makes it less appealing for those seeking sheer space capacity.
Additionally, the drive comes with Buffalo’s SeekWizard software, which is Windows-only, allowing users to explore various demo modes without needing to write data to the drive.
Limited Availability
With only 50 units in existence, securing one of these beautiful drives will require participating in a lottery system initiated by Buffalo. Successful entrants will see their drives shipped starting June.
