The nostalgia surrounding Minecraft is potent. It can drive you to dive back into the game time and time again, even after extended breaks. Virtual Reality was among the first platforms that made me feel that awe once again, especially when my Oculus Quest arrived nearly a decade ago. However, as of May 2025, Mojang has officially ceased support for Minecraft VR.
This decision was anticipated; earlier in October 2024, they announced that support would conclude in March 2025. The peculiar timing of its termination aligns with a grace period they offered.
Initially, the VR experience was compelling yet underperforming. Performance issues plagued players and often required troubleshooting, resulting in a less satisfying gameplay experience. While hitting virtual trees and zombies was less engaging than expected, many cherished the immersive worlds they could explore in VR.
Subsequent titles like No Man’s Sky and Phasmophobia have demonstrated how VR can rejuvenate flat games, and Minecraft was no exception. With VR support, players felt fear, excitement, and wonder all over again when threatened by Minecraft’s famous mobs – the creepers and skeletons.
After Mojang’s announcement, many enthusiasts speculated about the possible community-driven solutions, such as mods like Vivecraft, allowing PC players to experience VR in innovative ways. However, the community still mourns the loss of official support, knowing that many players were drawn to the enchanting blocky universe of Minecraft through VR.
The withdrawal of support underscores the challenges developers face as they balance continuity and innovation in a continually evolving game environment. Despite its shortcomings, Minecraft VR provided countless fans with memorable moments, and as it fades into history, many hope that the community can sustain that legacy.
