Sony Launches New PlayStation Studio After Canceling Live Service Projects
After the cancellation of two live service games, Sony announces a new internal studio to create a live service game.
Just a few months after reportedly canceling two unannounced live service games following the Concord debacle, Sony has introduced a new internal studio named TeamLFG, which is focused on developing a live service game.
“TeamLFG originated at Bungie, but has also rallied developers from across the industry to bring to life an ambitious incubation project that I’m very excited about,” said Sony’s Hermen Hulst in the announcement. “The studio is now fully formed and ready to be introduced to the world.”
While the studio isn’t led by any prominent figures, it consists of “industry veterans” who have been involved in games like Destiny, Halo, League of Legends, and Fortnite, along with newcomers who bring fresh perspectives. Specific details about their ongoing project remain undisclosed, but it is expected to include a significant social aspect.
In their announcement, TeamLFG stated that their first game is a team-based action title inspired by various genres, taking place in a comedic science-fantasy universe. Eurogamer speculates that this may correspond to the MOBA-style PvP game under the codename Gummy Bears that began development at Bungie but has since moved to this new PlayStation studio.
This development is particularly intriguing, especially considering Sony’s initial hesitance towards live service games after failing with Concord. However, the success of Helldivers 2, which continues to attract a strong player base, indicates a potential shift in their strategy. As TeamLFG articulates, they aim to create immersive multiplayer experiences with community involvement through early access playtests, allowing for a dynamic response to player feedback in the ongoing evolution of their game.
