Gearbox Revives Rarity in Borderlands 4

Borderlands 4 aims to enhance the value of legendary items, shifting the focus back to truly special loot.

During today’s State of Play showcase, we got a firsthand glimpse of Borderlands 4. Visually, it appears to remain true to its predecessors. However, Gearbox has revealed a noted change regarding legendary items in the game.

Gearbox’s CEO, Randy Pitchford, mentioned that while players typically expect to find a wealth of loot, the upcoming title will feature a much more selective approach to legendary items. Senior Producer Anthony Nicholson expressed this idea, stating, “We’ve overhauled our drop rates and loot. Our goal is to restore the uniqueness of legendary items, which should make them feel special once again.”

Nicholson emphasized the need for balance; while players love to hunt for quality loot, an excess of legendary items diminishes their significance. He insisted the development team has worked diligently to ensure that acquiring these legendary elements will feel rewarding.

If all goes well, fans can look forward to experiencing a more meaningful loot chase when Borderlands 4 launches ahead of its initially scheduled release on September 12, 2025, instead of the 23rd.
