Developers Express Frustration Over Oblivion Remastered's Launch Timing
Bethesda's surprise release of Oblivion Remastered has brought concerns from indie developers about its impact on their sales.
Launching a video game can feel as complicated as orchestrating a military campaign on Mars. It’s akin to a never-ending, multidimensional chess match where victories can turn into defeats without notice. Developers often find themselves disheartened when a major game release, like Bethesda’s unexpected Oblivion Remastered, occurs in an otherwise quiet launch period.
Raw Fury’s CEO, Jónas Antonsson, noted, “These shadow drops can bury our game’s visibility. Everything in the space gets overshadowed.” Raw Fury is behind the horror puzzle game Post Trauma, which coincidentally launched the same day as Oblivion Remastered.
Antonsson emphasized the importance of careful planning regarding release dates, implying that major releases like Oblivion can severely disrupt indie developers’ strategies. Both Antonsson and fellow developers, including Mike Rose and Brian Bucklew, discussed the adverse impacts of such surprise launches on revenue. Bucklew remarked, “Oblivion’s release caused a noticeable drop in our daily sales.”
This isn’t an isolated incident; earlier releases like Monster Hunter Wilds have also negatively affected smaller titles. While some may argue for more transparent release timelines, the competitive landscape will inherently challenge any developer’s ability to break through, especially when major publishers dominate the scene.
