Wingspan Creators Take Legal Action Against Tariffs Threatening Board Game Industry
Stonemaier Games and other board game publishers are suing in response to skyrocketing tariffs on imports from China.
Stonemaier Games, the publisher of the acclaimed board game Wingspan, has joined several other board game creators in a collective lawsuit against the U.S. government. This legal action arises from the recent imposition of exceedingly high tariffs on imported goods from China, which have risen to a staggering 145%. These tariffs are putting the future of many publishers at risk, with some estimating that the costs related to this tariff increase could exceed $1.5 million for Stonemaier Games alone.
The lawsuit, described as a group effort, has reportedly attracted a significant number of publishers, although Stonemaier has indicated that the law firm managing the case has reached its capacity for clients. Concerns are particularly heightened for upcoming Kickstarter projects, as rising import costs threaten their viability.
Although the effectiveness of this lawsuit remains to be seen, it is expected to serve as a protest against the government’s actions, drawing attention to the severe impact tariffs have on the board game industry.
