The Origins of Hollow Knight: From Small Project to Metroidvania Phenomenon

A look into how Hollow Knight transitioned from a small indie game to a major title in the gaming world, thanks to crowdfunding.

Team Cherry has shared insights into how the acclaimed Hollow Knight was initially envisioned as a mere two-hour experience. The Kickstarter campaign not only met but exceeded expectations, allowing them to expand the game into a rich Metroidvania experience.

While players are excited for the forthcoming Hollow Knight: Silksong, the original 2017 game catapulted Team Cherry into the limelight, enabling them to further delve into the underground kingdom of Hallownest. Players encounter a multitude of quirky yet dangerous bugs, each contributing to a compelling story marked by excellent controls and immersive world-building.

In an interview from 2018, Gibson revealed, “It was really like a small thing,” indicating their modest goals at the outset. However, with fan support, the project flourished, leading them to infuse the game with countless unique features and areas.

The sequel has been in development for over six years, hinting at an ambitious and sizeable project with a tentative release window in 2025. Fans eagerly await this sequel and wonder how it will compare to its predecessor.
