'Create an Outstanding Game': Sloclap Challenges the Free-to-Play Model

Sloclap, the developer behind the martial arts game Sifu, announces its new 5v5 football game Rematch, priced at $30, refuting the notion that online games must be free-to-play.

Sloclap, known for their martial arts hit Sifu, is shifting gears with their new competitive soccer game Rematch, set to launch this summer at $30. Unlike many contemporary multiplayer games that have transitioned to a free-to-play model, Sloclap’s Creative Director Pierre Tarno shared that they never considered making Rematch free-to-play.

“I never considered free-to-play,” Tarno stated. “The best way to ensure commercial success is to create a truly excellent game.”

He emphasized that it is possible for a compelling multiplayer game to be reasonably priced and still attract players. Following in the footsteps of other games that have succeeded at a $30 price point, such as Helldivers 2, Sloclap aims to reassure gamers that respect for player intelligence and enjoyment is a priority, insisting that quality can stand on its own without resorting to a free-to-play strategy.

Be on the lookout for Rematch, which is scheduled for release on June 19. For more insights, check out Daniella’s hands-on preview.
