Unity's CEO Critiques the Metaverse: A Dismissive Reflection
Unity's CEO Matt Bromberg expresses his skepticism about the metaverse, calling many of its platforms unimpressive.
Unity is facing challenges under the leadership of Matt Bromberg, who took over after the controversial tenure of John Riccitiello. Riccitiello’s past remarks labeling developers as “fucking idiots” and the botched runtime fee plan led to a significant backlash from the developer community, ultimately forcing his resignation. \n\nBromberg’s approach focuses on mending the company’s reputation, emphasizing collaboration over conflict with developers. During a recent appearance on a Verge podcast, he stated, “I was never a massive believer in the metaverse during that period of time. I experienced all those new platforms and just thought they were garbage.” \n\nHe further clarified that the term ‘metaverse’ covers more than just what Mark Zuckerberg might define it. He distinguishes between true live service platforms, like Roblox and Fortnite, and those which have failed to capture consumer engagement, asserting that gaming experiences remain crucial for user retention. \n\nThe overwhelming interest from players in established live-service games raises questions about the future of new gaming experiences. Bromberg suggests that while the metaverse concept has not succeeded yet, it doesn’t diminish the sustainability of live service gaming. \n\nIn light of the emerging technology, he expresses optimism about the potential for augmented reality (AR) devices in the coming years, suggesting they will become commonplace as tech improves. He remarked, “Put aside the idiocy of some of the metaverse stuff. The future … is going to be tied to massive consumer adoption of peripherals.”
