Unity's New CEO Discusses Overcoming the Company's Troubled Past

The new leadership at Unity seeks to rebuild the company's reputation following a series of poor decisions and backlash from developers.

Unity has faced challenges in recent years largely due to its controversial management strategies. The former CEO, John Riccitiello, made headlines for criticizing developers, which set off a series of regrettable decisions, including the introduction of a runtime fee proposal that angered many in the developer community.

The new CEO, Matt Bromberg, expressed the need for change in the company’s relationship with its users. He reflected on the previous conflicts, stating:

“We were at war with our customers, effectively, when I arrived. Folks were boycotting us. They were really unhappy with how we were charging them and how we spoke. And you can’t have a business where we’re [fighting our] customers. That’s insane.”

This statement illustrates the urgency with which Bromberg aims to rectify past grievances. He believes in creating genuine value through product improvement, emphasizing that business models focusing on monetization tricks fail to build long-term partnerships with developers.

Bromberg also conveyed that, although layoffs were painful, they were necessary to restructure the company effectively. He noted that the focus should not only be on changing the company’s culture but also on addressing leadership issues directly to ensure a supportive environment for developers.

As Unity works toward regaining the trust of its user base, Bromberg is committed to fostering a relationship built on authentic communication and shared success.
