Steel Hunters is a new mech combat game from the developers of World of Tanks, scheduled to launch in early access on April 2. This free-to-play title emphasizes tactical gameplay, diverging from the fast-paced action typical of similar games like Mecha Break.
In Steel Hunters, players engage in methodical battles that feature a variety of gameplay elements reminiscent of hero shooters and extraction games. After testing the game at the Game Developers Conference, I noticed that while battles against AI-controlled mechs offered engaging moments, the initial gameplay felt slower than expected.
Each match occurs in a large arena where teams of two can explore for resources and face off against enemies, relying on strategic movement and coordination. The combat system operates similarly to a MOBA, where collecting energy from slain drones aids in upgrading abilities for more intense battles.
Although combat moments were thrilling, the overall pace of gameplay was emphasized as ultra-cautious, requiring players to manage abilities carefully to succeed in confrontations.
Early impressions suggest that while Steel Hunters promotes a unique approach to mech combat, distinguishing itself from other titles in the genre, it might not appeal to all players looking for fast-paced action.
