Lawsuit Filed by Poppy Playtime Creators Against Google Over Fake Apps

The developers behind the horror game Poppy Playtime are taking legal action against Google for allowing counterfeit applications that imitate their game.

Mob Entertainment, the creators of the popular horror game Poppy Playtime, have initiated a lawsuit against Google for failing to eliminate fraudulent applications that have flooded the Android Play Store. These imposter apps mislead users by using the Poppy Playtime name and official screenshots, charging unsuspecting customers sums as high as $95 for non-existent products.

The misleading applications, notably from Daigo Game 2020, boast titles such as “Poppy Playtime Chapter 4” and “Poppy Playtime: Chapter 3”. Despite having garnered over 1.1 million downloads, these apps currently remain available for download.

Mob Entertainment claims that after they raised concerns and filed a DMCA request, the fraudulent applications were briefly removed but subsequently reinstated by Google without explanation. The studio is now demanding a permanent takedown of these apps and $150,000 in damages for each instance of infringement.

As one of the most popular horror games, Poppy Playtime has captured the attention of millions, with Mob Entertainment declaring a staggering 40 million players across various platforms. This lawsuit highlights challenges game developers face in protecting their intellectual property in the digital age where scams proliferate.
