Warner Bros.’ ongoing restructuring has led to the cancellation of a previously unannounced expansion for Hogwarts Legacy, as well as a Definitive Edition that would have bundled the base game with new content.
A report by Bloomberg reveals that while the expansion was not publicly announced, it was anticipated to follow the director’s cut version reported earlier. The decision to cancel the expansion seems to stem from concerns about whether its development costs would be justified based on the expected content output.
The restructuring at Warner Bros. began earlier this year amid several significant failures in its game division, notably with titles like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Multiversus, which incurred a total loss of approximately $300 million. This has led to significant studio closures and shifts in direction, including the announcement that Warner Bros. Games chief David Haddad was stepping down.
Despite the successful sales of Hogwarts Legacy, which reportedly generated over a billion dollars in revenue, the cancellation of its expansion is unexpected, particularly as the company continues to prioritize franchises that have proven successful. A sequel to Hogwarts Legacy remains in development, marking one of the studio’s major focuses going forward.
