Blizzard's Decision to Restore Hardcore Characters After DDOS Attack

Blizzard Entertainment plans to revive World of Warcraft Classic Hardcore characters who died due to a DDOS attack, as confirmed by community manager Kaivax.

World of Warcraft’s Classic Hardcore mode is designed for high-stakes drama and nostalgia. However, recent DDOS attacks targeted the popular streamer guild OnlyFangs, resulting in many of their characters being killed during a raid. As community leader Sodapoppin stated on Discord, he felt uncomfortable continuing under these conditions.

In a surprising response, Blizzard’s community manager Kaivax announced plans to restore characters lost in this attack. He emphasized that this would be a unique case, as DDOS assaults are intentional efforts by malicious actors.

This response signifies a shift in Blizzard’s usual policy regarding character deaths, typically stating they cannot intervene in server disconnects or other gameplay issues. From now on, they may revive Hardcore characters lost during mass events deemed inconsistent with gameplay integrity, such as DDOS attacks. Overall, the community’s reaction remains mixed, with some grateful and others frustrated by the selectiveness of this action.
