Wipeout is getting adapted for the Dreamcast, bringing the classic PS1 racing game to Sega’s ill-fated console nearly 30 years after its original launch.
In recent years, there’s been a surge in fan projects attempting to port various games to the Dreamcast. One notable project surfaced in January 2025 when developer Maximqad made strides in getting Counter-Strike and Half-Life: Deathmatch functional on the Dreamcast utilizing the Xash3D engine.
Another port project emerged in late March 2025, when modder Jnmartin84 provided an update on their efforts to get Wipeout operational on Sega’s 1999 console. Video footage of their project, shared by the channel The Sega Guru (via Time Extension), showcased one of the finest PS1 racers running on Dreamcast, often exceeding 100 frames per second.
Reflecting on their accomplishment, Jnmartin84 mentioned that this endeavor was greatly influenced by their earlier Dreamcast port of the Nintendo 64 exclusive Doom 64. This prior work allowed the developer to create utilities for manipulating polygon headers and “fast math stuff,” which have also proven invaluable for making Wipeout operational on Sega’s classic console. They previously attempted to port Wipeout in 2023 but faced limitations including no sound and graphically glitches. The current port is not without faults, as Jnmartin84 notes that once a few tracks are raced, the music ceases to function, and occasionally attempting to exit to the main menu can result in crashing the entire game.
