The music of Helldivers 2 is rich with satirical elements, conveying themes of exaggerated patriotism. Composer Wilbert Roget, II explained that his aim was to create a soundtrack that encapsulates an unwavering, badged romanticism, devoid of irony.
“It’s jingoism, but it’s amplified with uplifting modern synth productions, and without suggesting any nuance other than the valor of the soldiers’ fight,” Roget shared during the Game Developers Conference 2025. “The satire works because the music believes it’s a pure patriotic love without irony or criticism.”
Roget elaborated on how he tailored the game’s music to represent different alien races, intertwining themes that reflect the dichotomous experience of the soldiers battling against nightmarish creatures, aiming to elevate both the tension and the emotional peaks of gameplay.
For instance, he referred to the track Ode to Liberty, which pays tribute to the musical stylings found in classic military films, ensuring a consistent thematic resonance throughout the game’s score.
Roget concluded, “The music not only sets the tone for the storyline but elevates the players’ engagement, thrusting them into the midst of a larger-than-life conflict, affording them the chance to become part of something grander.”
