Nearly 92% of PC Gamers Prefer Playing Older Titles as Community Grows to 908 Million
A recent survey reveals that a significant majority of PC gamers dedicate their gaming time to older titles, showcasing the enduring popularity of such games.
In recent insights shared by Ben Porter, director at NewZoo, during a talk at GDC, the state of PC gaming has emerged as stronger than ever. The report indicates that gaming community numbers have surged to approximately 908 million players globally.
Porter’s findings are derived from an extensive survey involving 73,000 players and data from over 10,000 games. Their research highlights a notable trend: a substantial 67% of gaming hours are allotted to titles that are six or more years old. Only 8% of players’ time is dedicated to games released within the last two years.
Some prominent games within this older demographic include:
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive/Counter-Strike 2: 7.1%
- League of Legends: 6.4%
- Roblox: 6.2%
- Dota 2: 5.8%
- Fortnite: 5.4%
Such statistics underscore the tendency of players to stick with established favorites rather than constantly seeking the latest releases, reflecting loyalties similar to that of comfort food. Overall, 92% of gaming time is spent enjoying older titles, reinforcing the notion that nostalgia matters significantly in the current gaming landscape.
