An Old Jedi Tradition
A long time ago (September 2021), during a PlayStation Showcase, Aspyr announced the remake of Knights of the Old Republic, a beloved RPG from 2003. However, the project’s journey has been tumultuous, encountering numerous setbacks over the years.
Initially, it faced an “indefinite delay” in 2022, and soon after, all references to it were scrubbed from Sony’s social media. Embracer Group’s CEO, Lars Wingefors, utterly refused to address the project’s status in public forums, treating it as a taboo subject.
Just last year, amid doubts, there were glimpses of renewed life for the remake, albeit coupled with the reality of another prolonged delay. During this period, the project transitioned from its original developers, Aspyr, to Saber Interactive.
In a recent discussion, Matthew Karch, CEO of Saber, confirmed the KOTOR remake is indeed in their development pipeline, but emphasized that they intend to leave public communications to Disney, who holds the story’s reins.
It’s a bizarre situation that echoes the troubled development journey of other projects, but remain hopeful! Saber Interactive reassured that everything discussed remains under development. As of now, there are no further updates to share.
While the situation has led to an amusing tradition of periodic reassurances regarding the remake’s existence, interest indeed persists in how this project will eventually unfold. Personally, I’d appreciate a subtle remaster of the original game with enhancements rather than a complete remake, but I remain open to whatever may come. For KOTOR, there is no death, only the Force.
