Voice Actors in Video Games Challenge Industry Proposal Amid Ongoing Strike

Video game voice actors continue to express concerns over new industry proposals that they believe lack sufficient protections against artificial intelligence.

Negotiations between the SAG-AFTRA union and video game publishers continue amid their ongoing strike, which began on July 26, 2024. The union reports progress but states that the industry’s latest proposal is ‘filled with alarming loopholes that will leave our members vulnerable to AI abuse.’

SAG-AFTRA, representing voice and motion capture actors, demands fair compensation and informed consent pertaining to the use of their faces, voices, and bodies in AI. However, the bargaining group claims that companies involved refuse to adequately protect performers in AI-related contracts.

SAG-AFTRA asserts that while game companies are suggesting that negotiations are nearing completion, significant differences remain regarding AI protections. Furthermore, they indicated concerns that the industry aims to undermine union solidarity as the strike prolongs, prompting a need for actors to remain vigilant against exploitation.
